Mr Scruff live DJ mix from Band On The Wall, Manchester, Saturday November 5th

In the good old days, DJs would play the whole night. They'd walk in before the first patron, turn on the decks, start slowly, build a groove, take the crowd through some peaks and troughs, work a room. Control the feel of it. Get to know who was on the dancefloor, who were the club regulars. A 6 hour set was a regular Saturday night residency. Why would you want to play for any less?

Seems like these days, superstar DJs are booked to play an hour. They smash out 4 or 5 tracks (usually their own) and leave. Not a lot of time to try out a new mix, or an old rare track, or a 17 minute mash-up. Just play 4 songs that sound the same and wear a stupid helmet. Have you ever seen a show by Deadmau5? It's a disgrace.

And then there's Mr. Scruff. And his 6 hour set. Of Jazz. And other stuff. In Manchester. For 11 quid.
