Mr Scruff live DJ mix from Band On The Wall, Manchester, Saturday November 5th

In the good old days, DJs would play the whole night. They'd walk in before the first patron, turn on the decks, start slowly, build a groove, take the crowd through some peaks and troughs, work a room. Control the feel of it. Get to know who was on the dancefloor, who were the club regulars. A 6 hour set was a regular Saturday night residency. Why would you want to play for any less?

Seems like these days, superstar DJs are booked to play an hour. They smash out 4 or 5 tracks (usually their own) and leave. Not a lot of time to try out a new mix, or an old rare track, or a 17 minute mash-up. Just play 4 songs that sound the same and wear a stupid helmet. Have you ever seen a show by Deadmau5? It's a disgrace.

And then there's Mr. Scruff. And his 6 hour set. Of Jazz. And other stuff. In Manchester. For 11 quid.

Mascara - Golden Years (Musica Hermosas re-touch)

This one's a bit of fun and should get your dancefloor jumping. Have you ever seen that video of Bowie singing this song while a whole dancefloor of 70s snake-hipped cool-cats shake it up? Well, I can't guarantee that's the reaction you'll get when you play this. It would be fun, though.

You might recognise this version from Soggy Disco Biscuit Volume 2, where I buried it deep in the set. Enjoy!

Yes - Owner Of A Lonely Heart (Virgin Magnetic Material Remix)

A few years ago some dick called Max Graham destroyed this classic AOR song by throwing it over a crappy generic house beat. Lazy, uninspired commercial rubbish. They loved it at Ministry of Sound and put it on every Session album that year.

This is more my style. A laid-back AOR Disco version that is true to the feel of the original. Virgin Magnetic Material is a young guy from Tel Aviv, Israel with a heap of these disco remixes under his belt. Check out his soundcloud for some great versions of songs by Talking Heads, Fleetwood Mac and Steve Miller.

Jestofunk -- Complete Discography

Jestofunk were great fun back in the 90s. I can't tell you much about them other than they were from Italy, they had a couple of crossover hits, and their songs would blow the roof of the discotheque!

I heard one of their songs on an ad for Myer the other day with Megan Gale in it, and then I decided to use it in Soggy Disco Biscuit Volume 6. It reminded me how much I liked them. I had the song "I'm Gonna Love You" on a mixtape called "Lisa's Party Mix" that I played non-stop from 1994-1996. Dunno where that tape is now ;)

So, s'pose you guys better have all of their albums. I'm sure they won't mind!

Sharon Jones -- "What If We All Stopped Paying Taxes?" (soggy disco biscuit taxed out edit)

I'm still mucking around with some soul remixes and I caught this Sharon Jones number on RRR this afternoon and thought it would fit. It seems to. Anyway, it's a bit of fun for a dancefloor.

"Shack Up (The Revenge Rework)" -- Banbarra

Oh yeah! I'll be playing this on the weekend. Oh, and a big shout out to the OPSMC peeps. You'll be hearing this at your disco party, too! How good is it! Great intro for working into a mix, nice break in the middle for the b-boys. Not much messing around with the old version, a little bit of reverb, and an outro that goes for 1:20. Such a nice groove, how could you not wanna dance to this?

Adele -- "Rolling in the Deep" remixes

Adele is everywhere. You can't escape her. She'll find you and bludgeon your ears with her post-Dido soul crap. Gawd, I'm sick of her already and I've only just started this blogpost.

But, I do like her song; "Rolling in the Deep". I like the way it builds to a strong chorus. I'll be sick of it again pretty soon, I guess. Probably about the time it features on a car commercial for Volkswagon.

Anyway, here are some pretty good remixes.

Saturday 19 November 2011

Greg Wilson -- Live at Glastonbury, 2011

Oh wow! You're gonna love this set. It's Greg Wilson live at the WOW! stage at Glastonbury this year. Greg Wilson is the shit! He's been spinning tunes since 1975. Then he gave it up in 1983, then he came back with a vengeance in 2003.

He was the first DJ to be given a residency at the Hacienda. He was the first DJ to mix live on TV! He had a big influence on the music scene in the 80s, helping the shift from disco to electronica.

His sets are famous for his use of a reel-to-reel unit dropping soundbites over the top of songs. You'll hear this throughout this set. His mixing is also pretty tight.

Some killer disco, some hip-hop, some down-tempo house. It's all there on this mix. Man, I'd love to go to Glasto. I'd spend my time in this tent, and U2 can go and get to buggery!

Gloria Jones -- Tainted Love (soggy disco biscuit rerub)

Here's a little remix I whipped up for the weekend. I love this song and throw it onto a dancefloor every chance I get. But it's too short, so I added a bit to it. I was kinda inspired by the Scratchandsniff guys from Glasgow and what they do with these old soul numbers. Here's my lame attempt. At least it's better than Soft Cell.

Chet Faker -- No Diggity

Chet Faker is one cool cat. Check out this version of Blackstreet's "No Diggity". It bumps along nicely. He's from Melbourne and if you are too you may want to check his show out at The Toff In Town on Saturday 26 November.

Billie Jean -- covers and samples

Billie Jean is probably the best song in the world. Probably. I must own over 25 different remixes of this song. I try to play it every time I DJ. Usually the original. It's fun to play, great to mix in and out of, and it's by MJ. What more do you want? Well, there's some good versions kicking around that you may like.

Here's one by a bloke called Aloe Blacc. You may know him from his huge world-wide smash "I Need A Dollar". This is a great, stripped back version. It makes more sense this way. I've always wondered why a guy would be singing about a child-paternity claim in such an uptempo, dancefloor friendly way?

If you were around in the early 2000s you would have come across the "Back To Mine" CD series of chillout albums. One of them, by Faithless, ended with this little reggae version. It's ace! A nice way to end a set.

And how about this mashup that was made in 1983. That's right, a mashup from the early 80s. And you thought only the Jive Bunny was doing that, silly rabbit.

Essential Mix -- Every one!

BBC 1 runs a radio show every Saturday night since 1993 called "The Essential Mix" It's hosted by Pete Tong, and is a 2 hour set by the best DJs in the world. Everyone's been on it and some of these sets are just fantastic. Some are also very important and changed dance music and DJ's lives forever.

Paul Oakenfold did a "Goa Mix" in 1994 that introduced people to the idea of Trance music for the first time. It was a huge step away from House for those listening in London.

In June, 1997, David Holmes dropped a 2 hour set that was a mix of some of his favourite tracks, moving from soul to rock, showing everyone that a DJ's record collection was more important than his scratching or mixing.

Pete Tong and Mike Pickering put together a mix celebrating the Factory and Hacienda in August, 2007 when Tony Wilson died. It's a great set.

Other rippers include Ashley Beedle's reggae set in 1998, Massive Attack's mix in 1994, and a live show from Creamfields in 1998 that was played 10 years later.

Lucky for you, someone's put every show up on Soundcloud and it's a great way to waste an afternoon.

Listen to and download every one here.

Todd Terje -- Remaster of the Universe

Todd Terje loves disco. That's good, because I love disco, too. The kid's only 25 years old, but man, does he know his disco. The guy is from some small village near Oslo, so there can't have been too many nightclubs for him to go to. So he started playing his own stuff on tapes at the local junior-school. And then, he discovered computers and almost single-handedly caused the re-emergence of the disco-edit.

Here's a little celebration of some great edits by Todd Terje. I love his remix of Chic's "I Want Your Love". It's a fun track to play to a dancefloor, because everyone thinks it's going to be something else. And then it isn't. I love fucking with a dancefloor.

This mix is put together by Leftside Wobble, and I'll do a little post about them soon, because they're kinda cool as well.

Tracklisting
  • Willow Band - Willowman (Todd Terje Edit)

I've talked about DJ Same before and some of his AOR Disco Edits. He's recently posted another one, capitalising on the recent interest in the AOR Disco genre. Danny Rampling -- Shoom

So, the story goes that Danny Rampling started "Rave Culture and the Summer of Love" in London by going to Ibiza with Paul Oakenfold, and taking drugs, and hearing House music for the first time in a club called Amnesia. And then they brought it all back to grimy, cold, miserable London. Yeah, okay, I'll believe that.

He did start a club called Shoom. He did blow our minds in a club called SW1 in the early 90s, where he'd mix Nirvana into disco into the Chemical Brothers. He did become one of the first Superstar DJs. And you know what that means. CDs produced en masse, radio shows, worldwide tours, and eventually an announcement that you need to retire.

So here's his retirement show, broadcast on BBC1 as an Essential Mix, Christmas morning, 2005. And, like all rockstars and sportsmen and artists who announce a retirement, I think he's since come back out of retirement.

Oh, and if you were going to play a last ever, say-goodbye, retirement set on the radio, would you play Simply Red? Nah, me neither.

Norman Jay -- Good Times

Norman Jay is wikkid, man! He's got an MBE! He's from Notting Hill in London, and if anyone best represents what the Notting Hill Carnival is like, it's him. He's been DJing at it for 3 decades with his Good Times Sound System. Here's an example of an hour of one of his sets at the carnival.

And, like almost every successful part of the London House scene, this has expanded into a series of CDs. Take a listen to the 30 Year anniversary CD below.

Sadly, he didn't bring the Good Times to the festival this year. But he did play at The Big Chill Festival.

The Big Chill Festival is held in a castle in Herefordshire, and Norman Jay traditionally takes over the main stage on the Sunday afternoon. Here's his set from this year's party.

  • Joe Thomas – Plato’s Retreat
  • Candi Staton – When You Wake Up Tomorrow
  • Omar – Feeling You
  • The Detroit Experiment – Think Twice
  • Soloman – I Keep Forgettin’ Recycled

Naysayer and Gilsun -- Exclusive Interview

I love mashups! I know, people tell me that they're a bit old now. That as soon as we started hearing 2ManyDJs in Kmart as muzak, then it was all over. But yeah, that was 7 or 8 years ago now and I still love it. Other people do, too! There's a reason Girltalk comes out here every summer.

Naysayer and Gilsun are great fun and are everything a couple of young punk DJs should be. They play anything and everything, usually all at once. Download their album "Naysayer and Gilsun are in space" and you'll hear everything from Daft Punk, to Salt n Pepa, to the Grease Megamix. Nothing wrong with that, I say. Sounds like a usual Saturday night DJing to me. But whereas I'll do it over 3 hours, these guys smoosh it all together in a 4 minute song.

We were stoked to see them appear on the Golden Plains line-up for 2012 and sought them out to ask them a few questions.

-- How long have the two of you being playing together? How did you start out?
We've been doing this together for 3 years.  We started playing house parties as all our friends turned 18. It was always a shitty sound system and one laptop.  Eventually, by chance, Streetparty saw one of our gigs and started booking us.  The video stuff is a more recent endeavour of ours. We started that about a year ago and have been doing it live for only three months.

-- Whereabouts can we catch your sets at the moment?
At the moment, most cities around Australia! We are kicking off a tour and now you can get the details at our website http://www.naysayerandgilsun.com/

-- What equipment do you use when you play? CDJs? Ableton?
We use CDJS (or 1200s if we want to get girls) and Serato.  Plus a MixErmegency as a serato video plugin.  All our video is done with an external midi-controller.  So we telepathically communicate to mix in time with each other.

-- Comparisons between yourself and other mashup acts are inevitable. The first that springs to mind is Girltalk. His sets are a lot different to yours. You guys seems to play parts of the songs for a lot longer, whereas he might only grab a few bars and then straight into something else. Is this a fair comparison?
We started out as the ultimate fanboys.  Essentially that comparison was totally correct.  But since then, especially with the arrival of our Audiovisual set, we've developed our sound into something more drawn-out and crossover.  With a similar mix of genres but more focus on dance music and building a sustained vibe, something more like 2manyDJS or an Optimo party set - at least that's what we aspire to.

-- Who would win in a fight between yourselves and the Yacht Club DJs?
We don't know, but we can only imagine any such fight would take the same form as those in Real Steel, the film where Hugh Jackman controls giant robotic mech-boxers in a futuristic sports fighting ring.  This is a real film, out this year. I also imagine it would end with (robot) tears and hugs.

-- "Naysayer and Gilsun are in space" is a great album. It's been a while, though. Can we expect another album soon?
At the moment we are very focussed on the audio visual show, so it remains to be seen when we next put out a purely audio mix tape.

-- You seem pretty relaxed about people 'sharing' your tracks. What's your opinion on the current state of file sharing of music on the internet?
We're definitely in no position to criticise people for using, sharing and listening to music freely. It feels like at the moment there are a lot of different business models being thrown at the wall. Not all are sticking but a lot of them are. We think the internet is going to lead to a renaissance for artist profits and a focus on quality physical releases and live performances.

-- What can you tell us about your video compilations? Can we expect to see some of these at Golden Plains?
What can't we tell you? We're really excited about them. This is our new thing.  We take scenes from movies, television and anywhere else and remix them in conjunction with music from all over the genre spectrum.  The vibe we are going for is a totally cohesive, drawn out, mind bending dance experience.  We try and keep a visceral, visual, colourful edge to the movies we sample.  It goes from dark to happy, light hearted to intense and everywhere in between.  It's almost like going to see a movie but you can dance and flirt with the person next to you.

-- You played a few festivals last summer, what can we expect from you guys at Golden Plains next year?
It's such an honour.  We will be doing our audiovisual set and our focus will be on finding a mood that is perfect for Golden Plains.  We are going to be playing a drawn out set of our more filmic, intense video remixes and electronic music.  For us, Golden Plains has been a fun and very intense experience in the Supernatural Amphitheatre.  We hope to deliver the same thing.

Take a look at their latest video mashup and, like me, start to get excited about catching them at Golden Plains

And here's an old mixtape of theirs from about a year ago.

Will Cumming -- Music for Serious Gardening

Here's a fresh selection of down-tempo house and disco, mixed with a freshly squeezed lemon and a sprig of mint. Just the thing to crank up loud on the stereo so you can hear it outside while pruning the hedges.

Will Cumming is a DJ in Melbourne. He plays all sorts of stuff, and if you want to catch him, you'll find him at Red Bennies on a Thursday night or Boutique on a Saturday night playing in the side room.

This mixtape is smooth and sultry -- perfect for a balmy Melbourne summer evening. Some great tracks on there, but keep a look out for the remix of "Flight Facilties" by Foreign Language. Oh, and a stripped back version of "Baby You're Still The Same" that bounces along sweetly.

Soggy Disco Biscuit -- Volume 8

Summer's almost here, so time to hit the footpath or the treadmill and shake off those winter kilos. November's mixtape is all about running.

Some big voices in this month's mixtape. We've got some Nina Simone, some James Brown (kinda), some Prince, some Stevie Nicks and someone called Chance doing a pretty good version of Aretha. A very vocal mix coming your way.

I've been doing a lot of running lately, and I wanted to make something to run to, and this is what I ended up with. I don't normally play a lot of deep house, but this mix starts off quite deep. Good bass lines and subtle vocals to get focussed on the treadmill.

From there, we move into some contemporary tunes and a couple of nice remixes of some of my current favourite tracks from Metronomy and Gypsy and the Cat. Then, once the endorphins have kicked in, a bit of cheese to get you past the last couple of kilometres. And that version of Massive Attack's "Unfinished Sympathy" takes on a whole new meaning when sung by Tina Turner!

Plug this into your iPhone, launch the Runkeeper App, and try to get to 10km!
