Ministry of Sound -- Live & Remastered -- 20th Year Anniversary Box Set

Twenty years ago, a big warehouse in Elephant and Castle was converted into a dance club, and called itself the Ministry of Sound. Modelled on the Warehouse, it soon became a magnet for DJs and dance enthusiasts the world over.

Before MoS started releasing their own mixed CDs, the DJs used to record their sets on their DAT machine. You could often pick these recordings up at Kensington Market the next day on tape.

Here is a collection of 5 great sets from the DJs playing the big room. Enjoy!

Man Friday -- Love Honey (Leftside Wobble Edit)

A nice reworking by Leftside Wobble on this old Larry Levan Paradise Garage classic. You can almost hear the whistles on the dancefloor halfway through this little number. Great bassline all the way through, a wobbly keyboard towards the end, cheesy nonsensical lyrics and all coming in at a healthy 120 BPM.

This isn't a remix. It's an edit. Extending an intro and outro is not remixing. It's just making a song longer. Apparently. Whatever! Enjoy this late night sleazy take on a original House Classic ©

Ruff Jamz Audio -- Chef De Party

From:- Bio

"At just 33 The Earl, aka Chef De Party is already something of a veteran of the Scottish club-scene, having been involved in promoting and DJing at many esteemed club-nights in Scotland's capital. Chef is now making a mark for himself in Glasgow after a recent re-location, setting up his Forever Cookin' promotions business which is working closely with institutions such as The Sub Club, Melting Pot and La Cheetah as well as bigger events such as Wee Chill and Electric Frog. His huge passion for forward thinking deep house and heart-warming soulful sounds are also proving to be popular as the Solid Gold Safari all-dayer he ran at The Halt Bar with DJ Dribbler every Saturday attested. Look out for news of a string of brand new Safari projects coming for 2012 on both sides of the country. "

ClashMusic DJ Mix Podcast

I kind of like the idea of band members getting together and doing a DJ set. I've seen members of Architecture in Helsinki play Martika's version of Love Thy Will Be Done, and hear that !!! put on a great dance set.

The ClashMusic Podcast has posted over 100 episodes, and a lot of them are sets, mostly unmixed, put together by bands. It makes a refreshing change from superstar DJs (here we go) programming a blend of all their latest remixes.

I like this one from Australian 'soon-to-be's'; Canyons. It's hazy and light.

Tracklisting:-
1. Grouper 'Alien Observer'
2. Kate Bush 'Army Dreamers'
3. The Honeymoon Killers 'Decollage'
4. Aqua Bassino 'Too Hard To Try And Find'
5. Shock 'Dream Games'
6. Eurythmics 'Somebody Told Me'
7. Jerry Garcia/The Grateful Dead 'Love Scene'
8. Charles Wright 'Do Your Thing'
9. The Vampire Sound Inc 'The Lions And The Cucumber'
10. The Majestic Arrows 'I'll Never Cry For Another Boy (Rehearsal)'

Apple Scruffs -- "The Orchard"

If you listen to online radio stations you may have come across The Groove Skool Radio Show. It's a set up coming out of London and broadcasting live on the internet for everyone to hear.

On Friday nights, the Apple Scruffs take over the airwaves and play for two hours. Their show is called "The Orchard" and, as they put it, they play; "two hours worth of tuneage from each of our record boxes/hard drives, basically what we would be listening to on a Friday night in the house, except this time we're broadcasting it to the world."

They play soul, funk, disco, jazzed up dance tunes. A great Friday selection. Here's the second hour of their show from last week.

Tracklist

  • Gregory Porter - 1960 What

Stardust - "Music Sounds Better With You (Eat More Cake remix)"

This is always up there in everyone's top 10 electronic songs of all time. Well, it's certainly in mine. There's loads of good remixes flying around of this song. One of my favuorite DJing tricks used to be a mashup of this with Madonna's Holiday.

Here's a great down-tempo, dubby version that would start off an evening mix on the terrace very nicely.

Joy Division - "Love Will Tear Us Apart (Virgin Magnetic Material Remix)"

This is one of those songs that really should be left alone. The original is pretty much all we need, right now, thank you very much. This was a huge song when I was a kid. Stop messing with my childhood. Oh, and while we're on the subject. No, I don't need you to remake my favuorite movies from my childhood either.

But, this version is okay. It's another great remix from that guy from Tel Aviv. Enjoy!

U2 - "God part II (The Rubber Ring Rework)"

Fuck U2! Oh, and fuck Bono, too! What a wanker. Look at this and then try to argue that Bono is not the biggest muppet in the world. You can't.

But, you can fall in love with this little reworking of one of their semi-decent songs.

Style Council - Long Hot Summer (DJ Tigerstripes Longer Hotter Redux Edit)

Were the Style Council any good? I really don't remember. They had that song "Shout To The Top" which was a ripper, but they also pinched one of my all time favourite house tracks "Promised Land" and butchered it. My mate Mick used to serve Paul Weller in a bar in London after the Style Council went kaput. Apparently, he was a cunt.

Summer's coming. Here's a nice Balearic remix of one of their songs I actually liked when it came out in 1983. DJ Tigerstripes is from Portland, Oregon and knows a fair bit about remixing old 80s tracks. Check out his soundcloud page here.

Soggy Disco Biscuit -- Volume 9

The launch of mixtape number 9 means that summer is finally here and that means it's BBQ time. So, you'll need something smoky and cool to listen to while you mix up some cocktails and marinate the chicken wings. This month's mixtape is all at 100bpm -- enjoy the laid-back jams.

I've thrown down a few old favourites of mine and a couple of covers of some other favourites of mine into this mix. The Bag Raiders are still getting a spot in these mixes, that is proving to be a great album they released. And a wacky rejigging of Al Jarreau's theme from the 80s TV hit "Moonlighting".

I've also been digging out a lot of old disco classics, and that Dennis Parker song "Like an Eagle" is the gayest disco belter I've heard in a long time. It's been sampled heaps, you'll know it when you hear it.

Chuck this onto the iPod dock outside and crack me open a beer, please.

  • "Friendly Pressure"  - Jhelisa
  • "Heart And Soul" - Robert Owens
  • "West Coast Drive" - V.I.P. Connection
