RÜFÜS DJ set

I had the pleasure of catching RUFUS playing on Australia day at The Espy. They were supporting some unknown calling himself DJ Yoda. With a name like that, he'll never catch on. ;)

And while Yoda certainly delivered on his promise to provide a beat heavy set, it was the guys from RUFUS who really impressed me that night. Strong, driving drums with great hooks throughout. It was just enough to make me forget the travesty that was JJJ's number one song for 2012!

The lads also put together a tasty little mixtape. Check it, yo!

MIXTAPE for BBC Radio - ALL BACK TO MINE by DJ Supermarkt (Mellow Disco)

Sean Rowley runs a great little BBC radio show called "All Back To Mine" and invites DJs on to play little 30-minute sets. Here's a cracker from DJ Supermarkt. It's a mellow and laid back groove that sounds alright on this blustery hot summer's day.

Spiller -- Urastar (The Superman Lovers remix)

I remember 2001 like it was only yesterday. It was a time when disco dominated the dance charts and artists like Spiller and The Superman Lovers ruled. They had cross-over hits that still sound kinda tasty today. That's the key with disco retouches. If you do 'em right, they'll never get old.

So, twelve years later and here's a collaboration from both of those artists that is right down and tight! Nu-disco is what we call it today but whatevs. Check that synth at the 3 minute mark and tell me you wouldn't be having your own little dance floor party when that dropped.

Flight Facilities -- Triple J mix-up 1972-1982

A few weeks ago, the Flight Facilities lads were in charge of Triple J's mix-up on a Saturday night. Whereas most DJs would just come in and play some records for an hour or so, these guys took their task a little more seriously. They've put together a  set that is from 1972 - 1982. It is the first of 4 sets they did - you can see where this is going, can't you?

So, it's a well blended, Ableton mixed set that draws upon a wide range of classic hits from that decade, as well as a whole lotta sound bites from the news at the time.

It's a pretty good set. You can see that they were trying to go for that whole 2ManyDJs vibe, and in parts it works. In others, it just comes across as Jive Bunny mixtape.

Anyways, have a listen and keep your eye out for their next three sets.

Madonna - Lucky Star (Mr Leigh's Dub Instrumental)

Everything about this rework just ... um ... works. A smooth intro to work into the last song. The drop where finally you work out what the tune is that you've been shamelessly dancing to with your hands in the air. The classic hook from the original to charge the room, and a smooth break. No lyrics, no need.

JSquared -- Goodnight 2012

Got a bit of a treat for you all today. Check this little number out. It was sent to me by John Enston, who goes by the name JSquared on his Soundcloud. Dunno if he's a DJ, or just some geezer with good taste in tunes. But he's put together something kinda special right here. A little bit of old-school electro, a little bit of disco-funk, a nice handling of the sample, and off we go.

This is right on the money right now. Drop this next time your room is peaking, and I'll reckon you'll have them all saying "yeah!" It moves back and forth from Daft Punk, to nu-disco, to big room synths and back to the disco groove that you know Soggy Disco Biscuit just loves. I'll be playing this one fo' sho'

Johny James -- You Can Dance

A tidy little mixtape this morning all the way from Poland. Johny James is on the ones and twos, putting together a choice cut of some nu-disco belters. You'll find some Casio Social Club, some Solomun, and ... um .. some Sneaky Sound System. Maybe that band has only just come out in Poland?

Toro Y Moi -- Say That (Venice Beach remix)

I like the groove that Toro Y Moi is throwing down at the moment. He's heading our way soon, to play the Golden Plains festival. Should put on a good set. Kinda excited.

Here's a sweet little remix by Venice Beach to get you going.
